This is an authentic buttermilk starter. Each package contains a loose powder mixture of the strains needed to make the perfect buttermilk, in perfect proportions.

Buttermilk is a fermented milk beverage. Traditionally, before homogenizing, the milk was left for a period of time to allow the cream and milk to separate. During this time, the naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria in the milk fermented the milk, which aided in the separation and led to the formation of sour milk and sour cream. This sour cream was then made into butter, and buttermilk was the liquid that remained.

Cultured buttermilk is a similar product to traditional buttermilk. It is made from milk inoculated with lactic acid bacteria and is thicker than traditional buttermilk. If it is cultured for a long period of time, cultured buttermilk even reaches the consistency of yogurt. Cultured buttermilk contains many probiotics, making it especially healthy for you.

You can adjust the thickness of your buttermilk by controlling the incubation time so that it ranges from a fermented alternative to milk to a thick, creamy, and smooth yogurt-like buttermilk that is ideal for drinking, eating, baking, cooking, and more.
